Does AI cold calling work? 129 calls, zero meetings, and what it taught me
My AI sales rep made 129 cold calls in one day and booked zero meetings. Here is what I tested, why the script was never the problem, and what the lesson cost.

Does AI cold calling work? In my test, it did not. My AI sales rep, Anna, made 129 cold calls to local businesses in one day and booked zero meetings. About 46 of those calls were answered by a person, and almost all of them hung up within seconds. The whole day cost me about $10.
I did not accept the first result. I have spent more than ten years in sales, hiring and training closers, so I did what I would do with any new rep and coached between batches of calls. In one day I published ten versions of her cold call script. I tested five openers, two voices, and two AI models. Nothing moved the number.
That is how I learned the script was never the problem. A cold call in an AI voice lost in the first few seconds, almost every time. People hung up in the opening seconds whichever opener she used, and a better pitch cannot save a call that ends before the pitch begins.
So I changed her job. She stopped chasing strangers. Now she answers the people who call back and books them on my calendar. Someone who calls you has already decided to talk, and that is where an AI voice agent can be useful. Her inbound line went live the same evening, so this is her new job and not yet a result. I will share the numbers when I have them.
What did the lesson cost? One day and about $10. A sales development rep and a sales manager would need about three days and about $3,000 in payroll to make the same 129 calls with ten rounds of coaching, and that is the best case, with the manager beside the rep the whole time. At one coaching session a week, it takes more than two months.
That comparison leaves things out in both directions, and you should know what they are. My $10 does not count my own day or the AI tools I used to build her. The $3,000 does not count hiring, the months a new rep needs to get up to speed, a phone system, or the leads. And a person may well have booked meetings on those calls. The comparison is about how fast and how cheaply you can learn what does not work.
AI did not make my cold calls work. It let me build a sales function, test it, and improve it between batches of calls, so I knew by dinner what would have taken a sales team a quarter to find out. If you want that speed in your business, book a strategy session with me. Part one, where I built Anna in a day, is here: Can an AI sales rep actually sell?
